I agree with David’s suggestion to increase the number of non-USA nominees.

I don't think that the goals for increasing world-wide representation need to be compromised by an effort to increase the overall election yield in response to an increasingly qualified candidate pool. In fact, my hypothetical example suggests a possible increase in the non-USA yield to 3 per year. This can be a both/and not an either/or effort.
On the other hand, the fact that there are only 2 non-USA nominees this year should suggest to us that we ALL, regardless of where we live, need to think globally in deciding who to nominate in a given year.

I don't agree with only one overseas each year because it doesn't make more balanced. RHF should be "more international".

I agree with David
Only two overseas nominations this year and two vacancies
As against more than 20 US
Perhaps select only one overseas each year to make it more balanced
Just a thought

Subject: [Reading-hall-of-fame] Re: RHF elections, 2019-2020
RHF colleagues,
As I looked at this year's slate of RHF candidates for election, I was overwhelmed by the quality of the slate. Not to imply that the rest of us were not elected from highly competitive pools...., but there were SO MANY qualified candidates. I could easily have voted yes on at least 8-10 of those in this year's pool without compromising even an ounce of quality.
It makes me wonder whether we should adopt a variable stance in deciding on the number who can be elected in a given year, primarily to acknowledge that there will be an ebb and flow in the size of the "deserving candidate" pool from time to time. Perhaps we could suggest a two year expansion to 8 or 9, at least X (maybe 3) of which shall be from outside the US.
Topic for discussion at our next meeting at LRA in Tampa (is that right?)

Hi Everyone!
Thanks to those of you who nominated colleagues as potential members of the Reading Hall of Fame. We have 26 nominees this year and, as in the past, the voting will occur in two rounds.
First round, Ballot A, will be completed on July 1, 2019 and final round (Ballot B) completed on July 15, 2019.
Attached you will find:
a. bios of 2019-2020 nominees for RHF
b. Ballot A, 2019-2020
1. Please vote for five candidates following our guidelines -
You will select five living (new) members who are eligible for membership, two of whom will be non-U.S. nationals with permanent residence outside of the United States. Non-U. S. nationals nominated are designated with ** on the ballot and the list of bios.
2. Please send me your votes by 12:00 PM Mountain Daylight Time in the US, Monday, July 1. Please do not send your votes to the list serve but email directly to me at jan.dole at utah.edu<mailto:jan.dole at utah.edu>
You can mark Ballot A, 2019-2020 (see below) and return to me, or you can just email me a list of your five choices.
3. Once we have a count of the votes, I will send out Ballot B for the final round of voting.
4. Shortly, I will also send you a request for a vote on a separate ballot for one deceased nominee for membership into the Reading Hall of Fame. I will just send you the nominee's bio and you can just return to me a vote of yes or no.
Thank you for your support of this process. I look forward to hearing from you!
Jan
