[Xerte] RE: Importing older files to Xerte Online Toolkits V1.0

I'm trying to draw up a list of instructions to advise users how to export
files from previous versions of Xerte and import them into the new version.

At the moment, the only way I can do this is as follows:

1) Using your old system, export them as scorm.zip files and store them
in a safe folder

2) Extract the contents to a new folder

3)      Locate the <LO ... > header of the file called "learningobject.rlo"
for each learning object -
it will probably look like this:

                <LO styleSheet="templatePath + 'common/styles.css'"
inputColour="0xFFFFCC" selectableText="1"
                 templateData="FileLocation + 'template.xml'" name="Learning
Object">

                Replace it with the following

                <LO description="A flexible template for creating interactive
learning objects"
                targetFolder="Nottingham" version="1.0"
styleSheet="templatePath + 'common/styles.css'"
                inputColour="0xFFFFCC" selectableText="1"
                templateData="FileLocation + 'template.xml'" name="Xerte
Online Toolkit">

4) Now zip everything up into a NEW zip file and rename it to something
more comprehensible if needed

5) Click on Workspace and then on Properties and then on Import

6) Use the browse button to locate the zip file you have just created,
give the learning object a name and then click on the upload button to upload
it. You should get a confirmatory window and the new object should appear in
your 'Workspace' folder.

My apologies if this all sounds a bit laboured but it is intended for a
general audience, rather than developers. However I thought I ought to check
to see whether anyone has an easier way, as I'm about to put these out
together with the instructions for downloading the stick-based version of
toolkits 1.

Kindest Regards,

Thomas

Hi Pat

Hope you're enjoying it over there - beats Lougborough!

By complete coincidence I was also trying this on my macbook while I was at
moodlemoot today and getting the same error. Not sure why but it seems like
when submitting page2 to page3 the database name and prefix values are being
renamed as toolkits_data_april and tk__ respectively. Putting in the correct
details before submitting page3 then works.

This is obviously mamp not xamp but good to know it works locally on a mac
too. (So now it's Julian's job to get Xerte itself running on the mac! ;-) )

Not sure it's always the case but by default the mamp I installed had root as
both username and password so no blank password which might be why choosing
the xamp install doesn't work in this context.

Once installed everything else seems to work just fine.

Cheers

Ron

If I had FTP i would try from here, but these Spanish keyboards are surreal
to type on.

For a favour could you off list email me your system specification and
possibly a copy of your phpinfo page?

I´m keen to get an idea of what it is running on so I can build up a list of
server types and php settings.

Gracias.

So thanks for the reply. I changed it for me, so it is OK, no need to hurry!

I did a full install. By the way: where is the difference?
Also: the login form Username allows only 12 characters. In my institution we
use forename.lastname, though 12 characters is little to less for most of the
people. Is maxlength important for this field?

Did you install it using the xampp option on the first page? That will set it
up with one click, on a fresh xampp install. Pat can advise if you needed a
full install...

Hi Julian, hi List,

I tried to install toolkits on my local xampp. The first three pages of the
setup are OK. But on the fourth side all mysql queries failed due to "No
database selected".
I'm sure I entered the data in page 1 and page 2 correct (both root, as I'm
on my test system). I can't see any additional mysql settings on page 3. Also
the database IS created, I see it in my list of databases in phpmyadmin. But
the sitedetails get not written to the database, due to the above mentioned
errors.
I'm on Mac, tried Firefox 3 and Safari.

Thanks,

Peter

________________________________

The Xerte Project has reached a major milestone with the release of
Xerte Online Toolkits v1.0.

Toolkits v1.0 brings a range of new features to the browser-based
version of our authoring tools, allowing users to easily collaborate in
the development of learning materials.

Authors will find an improved interface and a number of workflow
enhancements, a wider choice of page templates, much improved support
for RSS publishing and open courseware syndication, additional
accessibility controls and better support for collaboration. Content is
more readily shared, reused and repurposed through the ability to export
and import projects.

Developers will find a more easily portable and customisable
application, and find it easier to extend the existing templates and
develop new ones, and the ability to share toolkits data with other
applications, and integrate toolkits with other systems.

System adminstrators will find an improved installer, support for
windows servers, and a management interface for day-to-day
administrative tasks.

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed throughout the beta
programme.
