Updates from the Institute for Policy and Engagement

Staffing
We are delighted to announce that we have an additional member of staff dedicated to public engagement, as Maria Richards has joined the team as Programme and Project Manager (Public Engagement). Maria was previously based in the the Research, Strategy and Development Team where she worked on promoting interdisciplinary research. Prior to this she worked in museums and heritage and has a wealth of experience in creating community participation.

We have also welcomed Melike Berker to the team, as Programme and Project Manager (Policy). Melike worked for the British Council as Parliamentary Affairs Manager, where she interacted with MPs and policy makers on a daily basis.

Irena Hulova has left the team in order to pursue a new position working in policy at Nottingham Trent University. We wish her all the best and thank her for all her work over the past year.

Universities for Nottingham

On 20 January a new project which aims to significantly improve the quality of life for people throughout Nottingham was launched in BioCity. Universities for Nottingham<https://us20.mailchimp.com/mctx/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.universitiesfornottingham.ac.uk%2F&h=78766c119c07aa7daed850fcbc167fea03ddac38ed7b3e899d168a562ff36f5f&v=1&xid=6eea3c0284&uid=113484114&pool=&subject=> is a pioneering collaboration between the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, that aims to combine the strengths and civic missions of the two institutions to help drive prosperity and opportunity across our local area.

There will be plenty of opportunity for colleagues across the University to get engaged with the initiative. It is being led by the Global and Political Affairs Unit in External Relations who are working with us at the Institute for Policy and Engagement to consider the best way to do this in terms of research impact and public engagement. There will be a series of roadshows over the next few months to talk more about it – and potentially establish a UoN internal network for those interested in the civic agenda. But for now, if you’re interested in learning more about UfN – you can get in touch with amy.williams at nottingham.ac.uk<mailto:amy.williams at nottingham.ac.uk>.

Call for Volunteers - Science in the Park

As part of British Science Week, University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University are holding the 12th Science in the Park. This free, family-friendly day celebrates and promotes science, technology, engineering and maths and features hands-on activities, guided walks and short talks. To make this happen organisers need volunteers to help on the day and ensure the event runs smoothly. If you are interested please email sciinthepark at nottingham.ac.uk<mailto:sciinthepark at nottingham.ac.uk?subject=Call%20for%20volunteers> - no experience is necessary and support and briefing sessions will be provided.

There are training and heats across the UK, as well as a video entry option. Presentations must not exceed 3 minutes, must not involve PowerPoint slides, and any props used must be carried on by the participant themselves. Participants are judged on Content, Clarity and Charisma, and the best go through to the next round. In the aftermath of the Conservatives’ decisive election victory Paul Johnson will look at some of the challenges the new government will face. Beyond Brexit the big challenges will include promoting earnings and productivity growth after a decade of stagnation, addressing a housing market which is creating huge problems for the younger generation, tackling public service reform, especially of social care, and preparing for a rapidly ageing population. Paul will put these challenges in context and set out some of the policy options available to the new government. The making of theatre is a multifaceted, collaborative process. Each performance brings together the creative skills of actors, directors, designers and technicians, the support of producers, funders and venues, and the enthusiasm of audiences - all within a wider landscape of local, regional and national performance practices. In this inaugural lecture, Jo Robinson explores the ways in which new methods and perspectives in theatre research enable different voices to join the discussion, and new histories to be told.
