Bowland Initiative: Maths case studies for Key Stage 3

Call for ideas

A new way to make maths more attractive to Key Stage 3 pupils is being developed by the Bowland Trust, with support from the DfES. A 'bank' of 20-25 'case study' problems will be built round topics that appeal to 11-14 year olds, which teachers can choose to use to complement their maths teaching. Each case study will occupy 3 to 5 maths lessons.

This is a call for ideas for case studies. Those with the most interesting ideas (up to 40) will be offered a 'starter' grant of £2,500 for each idea, to develop it into a full proposal. The best proposals will then be awarded 'development' grants to produce the case studies during 2007, for implementation in the 2008 school year.

Those interested should explain their idea(s)and how it would make a good case study; they should also indicate the composition of their team, with evidence of past successful project delivery. Fuller explanation is in a background document that is available from bowland.mailbox at dfes.gsi.gov.uk Bids for starter grants, on no more than 3 sides of A4, should be made to this address, by 30th September - or to Quentin Thompson at Soho Lofts; London W1D 3DD.
