NCETM Collaborative Practice Researcher

Salary up to £45,000

NCETM Collaborative Practice Research Associate

Salary up to £25,000

The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) is a major initiative by the Department for Education and Skills to enhance professional development across mathematics teaching. It has been established in response to recommendations in Professor Adrian Smith's report 'Making Mathematics Count' and was launched officially on 27 June 2006. Tribal Group plc is running the Centre under a contract from the DfES.

The Centre is for all teachers and lecturers of mathematics, in all phases of education. Working with the wider mathematics community, it will facilitate, enhance and provide strategic direction and leadership for all aspects of continuing professional development in mathematics.

One aspect of the work of the NCETM is to set up development and research pathfinder schools and colleges, where a collaborative practice approach to professional development will be implemented. The NCETM regional coordinators will work with the pathfinders to implement collaborative practice. Collaborative practice has been developed from the Japanese lesson study and has been used in a small number of schools and colleges in a pilot project. A research project, involving at least 50 schools and colleges, is currently being set up to look at the impact of collaborative practice, the factors that lead to a successful implementation and the issues that it raises.

The Tribal Group seeks to appoint:

o a Collaborative Practice Researcher to lead this research project. The person appointed will be an experienced educational researcher with a successful track record.

o a Collaborative Practice Research Associate to work on the research project. The person appointed will have experience of working in educational research.

Both posts are funded in the first instance until March 31st 2009, and may be suitable for secondment.

The closing date for applications is 13th October 2006. It is anticipated that interviews will be held in the week beginning 30th October 2006.
