That's a good point. The only workaround I'd be able to implement would be to have the self assessment
elements on a separate LO launched from a NewWindow navigator page. That way you'd end up with the content LO still accessible without losing data entered in assessment LO.

When we had our user testing of the course we developed using XOT (http://datalib.edina.ac.uk/mantra/) our users wanted to go back to the previous pages to check some info and then come back to the page they are working on (e.g. a gap fill text or drag and drop activity) but found out that they lost the work they had already done on that page...
