[Xerte] Camtasia Studio

Bit late in the day – but just to say that I use Camtasia Studio and as has
been said it is the synchronisation of audio with PowerPoint slides that is
so useful and we have used it with Synote to provide automatic
transcription.  http://www.synote.org 

 

I also upload .flv  files onto the LexDis website as it makes for good
compression and works with JW player.  But swf files and other options are
available and like Ron, I play with the zoom feature when making in-house
training videos.   I also like the way it allows you to choose which part of
the screen you want to capture and the way you can add so many other bits
and pieces like captions, pull outs, arrows etc. 

 

At Southampton several groups use Impatica to record their lectures and
slides and put them up on Blackboard. http://www.impatica.com/

Cheers. I suspected those were the likely users. I think there are simpler
tools for getting started.

 

I suspect this is something that our tea would need to be involved in. Any

I use Camtasia Studio 7 and you can download a fully functioning 30day
trial.

 

Most of my Xerte screencasts on YouTube embedded on
http://mitchellmedia.co.uk/xerte are done with this but also with some help
from photostory, Premiere, Photoshop etc. 

 

I think in terms of teacher use those who want to progress on from the
basics could make good use of this especially if you setup templates and
libraries and preferred settings etc so realistically:

 

-        Can use with a bit of training

-        Can use with ongoing training and support

 

Are the most likely profiles. But some will be Cannot use, as it’s too
complicated and/or too time consuming.

 

I think the audio quality is just as important and tricky to get right but
that applies whatever tool is used. The Samson Go at about £30 is a great
little mic and what I've been using lately.

I now use Camtasia Studio as my first choice over other pro tools like
Captivate. I used to prefer the latter because of the smaller files size
e.g. recording stills rather than continuous motion and outputting as flash
but with devices like iOS devices  and popularity and functionality of
YouTube video seems to be the best format anyway and Camtasia Studio is far
more like a video editing tool than other tools. There are loads of
resources and tutorials on the camtasia site and elsewhere so I think all of
your listed profiles apply. It's got good options for setting up templates
with intro's and outro's etc so that all teaching staff have to do is record
their bit. But it's definitely not as easy to use as camstudio or jing or
screenr etc. I'd say there's a progression route from those solutions to
Camtasia Studio for those who really want to get more professional results
via post production and editing etc.

 

I suspect you know all that.
