[Xerte] Linux installation of toolkit

Firstly thanks for the presentation last week.  I was good to be able to talk with the movers & shakers.
Since I got home, I have attempted 4 installations of the toolkit:
Xampp installation on Windows XP is fine.
Xampp installation on Vista throws a MySQL error if I install MySQL as a service but not if I start Apache and MySQL with the restart command.  I can live with that.
Neither installation on a Linux box running Fedora 9 is behaving itself, despite following the instructions.
The opening page appears, and I can create a folder and a project.  These are indeed created in USER_FILES, owned by user apache and have permissions 777.  However, when I try to edit a project, I get a 404 error and e.g. "/toolkits/edit_12 not found on this server", despite USER_FILES/12-Guestuser-Nottingham existing.

Any idea what I've done wrong?
