Database.txt has placeholders – I always assumed it was read – replaced – written to root…

I'm confused with database.txt as Tom said a while back we don't use it anymore?

There are tests for people to run before they install, if you pass these then it'll install.

We could make it say Drupal lean, strip loads out of it, but then people will spend an age in management getting stuff set up

I’ve always thought about the installer, do we really need to tell people when things are ok? Or what table creation or insert query succeeded… I’d just be tempted to make it very lean, and only tell them when things went wrong… but is there anything extra that we can check?

Plus why does database.txt sometimes get copied to database.php but with empty fields… I’m not getting that one? Surely if we can read it in and then write it out, we must be doing something wrong in the middle?

It’s the one thing that really needs to work well, and be simple. We get a lot of feedback along the lines of ‘written for geeks’ re: the install guide (which, to be fair, it was, and if you can’t get on with it, should you be installing the software anyway? Many people get on just fine, and we don’t know what percentage of attempted installs are troublesome, or abandoned). I am around today, though installation isn’t my strong suit.

I know Ron, it’s not ideal. Thanks anyway, I’ll be able to keep an eye on it for some of today and hopefully Julian is around also…
