No, it mustn't do that. We can ship a free version, but I don't want to get into handling money. If we pay for a license to redistribute a component in toolkits, we need to recoup it from users: I don't want to get into that. I'd rather include open solutions, but if the best solution isn't open, then a freemium closed solution that we can redistribute would be OK.

I think he goal is to lean on the native HTML5 tags wherever we can, so use <video> if possible and fall back in browsers / situations where we have to. <video> won't play .flv, so in the case of flv being encountered we need to fallback to a flash solution anyway.

I have just been looking at the Longtail video site to try to find the licence for the video player.

I haven't been able to find the licence yet but it is clear that as well as the free version they have the Pro and Enterprise versions.

The Pro version includes "use on commercial web sites" so it could be that if the free version was distributed as part of Xenith that any University or College using Xenith on their web site would then be in breach of the licence. Could this compromise the acceptability of Xenith to these institutions.

Kind regards

Johnathan

"Presumably we can't redistribute a non-badged version? Maybe if we pay enough,"

I am pretty sure that Moodle used to include an early version of the JWFLV player from Longtail Video in their release, so it may well be possible to cut some kind of deal with them.

Kind regards

Johnathan

Firefox can play mp3 - it's mp4 where the confusion occurs - and
google have bought (i think) or are making an Open Source mp4 codec
(which is why firefox can't do it).

http://podcasts.ox.ac.uk/chaucer-audio is an MP3 playing in HTML 5 in firefox.

There is a lot of JS around which goes (in psuedo)

create me a video node
if no
use something else

long tail does it (and is perhaps a better option as it has plugins),
then there is videoJS, or mediaelements (we use mediaelements on
podcasts, but are moving to longtail - which you need to pay for to
have an unbadged version)
