[Syrphidae] Austrocheilosia Thompson

Hi Bastiaan,

Chris used his Systema Dipterorum as a sandbox, including nomenclatural
acts that were not published such as synonyms, new names, or validation of
species from synonymy. Such nomenclatural acts do not follow the Code, thus
they are not valid.

No matter how many websites duplicate the personal notes of Chris, they are
still invalid.

The old link to myspecies explicitely says that the classification in that
Excel file follows the ideas or vision of Chris, including names never
published:

http://syrphidae.myspecies.info/node/6170

The mention by Moran et al. (2022) is also a nomen dubium, as they mention
a name that it has never been published.

In the past, most of us (including me) used the presence of a name on
diptera.org as if this was a valid publication. Neal Evenhuis and Thomas
Pape (now in charge) told us several times that diptera.org is a
compilation of names, and the listing of a name on this web does not
constitute a publication following the Code. They cleaned as many as they
know of these "non-published" acts. In other words, if a new name by Chris
(like Austrocheilosia) is still listed on diptera.org, the web will never
constitute a reference to cite the name.

BTW, Austrocheilosia is not listed in the excel file for the classification
from myspecies website.

The name to use for this taxon is Cheilosia australis:

Here the photos of the type:

https://science.mnhn.fr/institution/mnhn/collection/ed/item/ed9350?listIndex=9&listCount=10991

Note: if I am right, the lectotype designation was never published by
Chris. Thus, the original syntypes are still valid as syntypes until a new
reviewer designates a lectotype in a publication.

This is not an isolated case, and there will be more names that Chris
coined in a manuscript or directly listed on diptera.org, which were never
published, like Neoplesia.

Cheers,

Ximo
