HOLIDAY ADULT LITERACY EDUCATION ADVOCACY CARDS

Colleagues: As a veteran of the United States Air Force [1957-1961] I am
celebrating Veterans Day this November 11th by once again making available
cards for celebrating Thanksgiving (Nov. 23), Christmas (Dec. 25), and
New Year’s Day (Jan. 1). For those who would like to have some cards that
celebrate military veterans and also advocate for adult literacy education
on these holidays, I have prepared these greeting cards based on the
teaching of adult illiterates and non-English speaking men from World War
II using Our War comic strips.

During World War II, over a quarter million young men learned to read in
Special Training Units in the Army. One of the resources used to teach
reading was a newspaper, Our War, which was published monthly from June
1942 through September 1945. Each issue of Our War included a cartoon strip
about Private Pete and his buddy, Daffy.

The November 1944 issue of Our War discusses Thanksgiving and gives thanks
that we are free and shall remain free. The December 1943 issue discusses
Christmas. The January 1944 issue discusses the New Year celebration and
the Four Freedoms from President Roosevelt’s famous speech.

I have attached a Microsoft Word file using the foregoing cartoon strips.
I have formatted the strips into card formats so you can print them out,
trim them down to card size, and use them as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and
New Year cards that advocate for adult literacy education. The back of each
of the four cards says: “Support Adult Literacy Education!” plus a little
identification information.

You can format the cards to print on special paper for greeting cards or
just on regular printing paper. In the past some adult educators have used
making the cards as a class activity with adult learners. Adult educators
and learners can use the cards to advocate for adult literacy education by
sending them to Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Lion’s club,
politician’s offices, and other places to stimulate thinking about adult
literacy education.

I hope you find the cards interesting and useful in your advocacy for
literacy education this coming holiday season!
