Cognitive science friends, I'm sure many of you have heard the news that Walter Kintsch has passed away. Below I share the message sent to the ST&D listserv. We write to share the news of the death of Walter Kintsch on March 24, 2023. As members of the Society for Text & Discourse know, Walter was a pre-eminent scholar and founder of contemporary research on discourse processing and text analysis. For decades, he contributed important ideas and methods such as the propositional analysis of text, levels of discourse representation, the construction-integration model, and applications of latent semantic analysis to discourse representation. In 2008, Walter received our inaugural Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award, in honor of his lifetime of contributions to our field. While Walter’s contributions certainly are manifested in his publications, his contributions to our community extend beyond scholarly works. He was also a mentor and collaborator to many members of our community, and their scholarly contributions have had a profound impact on our field. Many in our community had the good fortune to interact with Walter at conferences, such as our annual conference and the Winter Text Conference. Through those interactions, he was instrumental in shaping the collegial and intellectually engaged culture that is indicative of ST&D.We join you all in grieving the passing of a man who was a friend, mentor, and inspiration, to so many ST&D members. Let us also recognize that Walter’s influence lives on in the dozens of students, post-doctoral fellows, and colleagues who have been inspired by his work and his life. The Society is truly grateful and indebted to Walter for his contributions.Sincerely,Joe MaglianoChair of the Governing Board
