[Reading-hall-of-fame] one of many book problems

Dear colleagues,
We're encountering a troublesome trend here in North Carolina, and I'm
wondering how prevalent it is elsewhere: All books except for decodable
texts are being thrown out of some elementary schools....not just out of
the classroom, but out of the school. Here in my local district I have
heard first-hand accounts from four schools in the past two days. Leveled
texts, trade books (including diverse picture books), etc. are being boxed
up and removed from the property. My graduate students from the other side
of the state tell a similar story. Reading specialists are telling us (the
university faculty) that the "new research" shows that "other" than
decodable texts "don't work." They won't hear otherwise.

I usually don't crowdsource these sorts of dilemmas, but we've moved miles
beyond the point of reason. And this is but one of the egregious decisions
being made.

I knew the decodable text problem was bad, but this is staggering. What are
you hearing/seeing in your areas?
