[Reading-hall-of-fame] Re: bob slavin's passing

I never had the privilege of meeting Dr Slavin, but I was aware of his work.
I’m again saddened that another of our group has paased.

I didn't really know Slavin either, but I credit the start of my ability to help teachers have successful small group discussions in the classroom to my reading his 1980(?) article on jigsaw puzzle grouping. It was a substantive and practical step forward in enabling the teachers I taught on campus and did workshops with as a consultant to elicit productive and cognitively stimulating small group work. They usually found it came with a bonus--fewer not more discipline problems.

I cannot say that I knew him well, but I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed and learned from several occasions in which I was privileged to interact with him, some in person and some via print and email.  He and Nancy invited me to their foundation in the Baltimore area in the early 90s to talk about upping the ante on comprehension activities.  In the late 90s, Steve Stahl and I did a review of Success for All (and several other early reading programs and interventions), so we interviewed him on a couple of occasions and negotiated his member check of our evaluation.  And I always read his articles, even those I did not always agree with.

Above all, I found him to be a scholar of great integrity who combined equally strong commitments to equity and evidence. Equity for all students, with an extra commitment to those not always well served by our educational practices and institutions. Evidence so we don't deceive ourselves with runaway wishful thinking. His contributions will endure for many decades to come.
