Like Diane, I am saddened by the news of Frank Smith’s passing. His Understanding Reading was the first book I remember being assigned as a new doctoral student in 1977 at Syracuse University. I’m not sure which of my professors assigned the book (possibly Bill Sheldon, Margaret Early, or Hal Herber). I do recall each of them mentioning Frank Smith a lot and that impressed me because Bill, Margaret, and Hal were known to have spirited office discussions that doctoral students housed not that far away could pick up on (much to our delight and learning, of course).
A copy of David Olson’s remarkable remembrances of Frank Smith will find its way to the inside cover of Understanding Reading in my home library.
May the new year go easier on all the remaining icons in the field of literacy.

Happy New Year Everyone.
I am sad to share a message I received from David Olson regarding the recent death of Frank Smith. I have attached it below. Another great loss to the field of literacy.
Warmest regards,
Diane Lapp
