Interesting comments. To follow on the mentoring issue, I thoroughly enjoyed mentoring Patriann Smith through the Hall of Fame program. I learned so much from her and about her work.. and she has some very solid publications to her credit. Plus, she was recently elected to the LRA BOD. So working with LRA in some way may be an interesting pursuit and ultimately strengthen the efforts of both groups.

Hi all,

I agree with David. There is nothing sacred about the numbers. Expanding would be something to consider.

On another note, we would be expanding LRA and ILA’s directions, not competing. We are connected with LRA now so we could support their initiative or build a relationship with this initiative. Perhaps our mentoring process could be revisited to support it in new ways.

Just a thought or two.

I agree about promoting the careers of new scholars. We have had a mentoring program in place for quite a while, and it has been successful. However it has not focused on matters of race and ethnicity directly. Perhaps it should. We can make that happen right away. It is important to note, however, that we might end up competing with LRA's and NCTE's programs to establish communities for young minority scholars.

On the membership issue, I come down on the Hilary-Judith side of this initiative, but maybe with a different standard. Instead of suspending the recruitment of White scholars, why don't we just expand our efforts to recruit minority scholars. And, perhaps--given the issues with the pipeline into academia in the past, we should modify the 25 year rule.

Dear Colleagues,

I believe Moddy has pointed us all in a very good, long-term direction that builds support for scholars of color to establish their bona fides to one day be nominated and become RHF members as we all hope they will be. Lots of good ideas circulating …keep them coming.

Dear Colleagues,

It’s great to offer radical ideas to prompt us all to think. But I don’t think accepting only new RHF members of color truly attacks systemic racism. Much more helpful would be an initiative, as Judith suggests, to support a diversity of young scholars. Or a program of mentorship aimed at scholars of color, or an initiative to support undergraduates of color, especially those who are at risk of not staying in school.

Keep thinking everyone! I’m sure this creative group can come up with some excellent and valuable ideas!

Best regards,

Moddy McKeown

Dear colleagues,

I support Hilary’s suggestion. We might also want to consider creating an early scholars initiative to support diverse scholars in the futures in literacy research and leadership.

Dear colleagues

I have a radical proposal. I believe that RHF should only accept nominations of academics of colour until such time as people of colour make up 40-50% of our members. It would be a move against systemic racism that would express solidarity with our colleagues of colour. Some of us would even be prepared to resign to help even up the numbers and to speed up the process should this be considered necessary.
