Here is a simple plan that helps everybody in living in poverty:
Access to reading materials is the primary function of libraries. Research consistently shows that those who do more self-selected voluntary reading read better, write better, have larger vocabularies, and spell better. This is true of readers of all ages. The effect of reading is, in fact, larger than the effect of classroom instruction on literacy development. Readers also know more about several topics, including history, science and practical matters.
For families living in poverty, the library is often the only source of reading material, and as we all know, poverty is increasing dramatically. Studies show that the presence of a library reduces the impact of poverty and sometimes eliminates it.
Isaac Asimov was right in 1995 and his insight is still valid: "When I read about the way in which library funds are being cut and cut, I can only think that American society has found one more way to destroy itself."
