I tried earlier to forward an announcement that I received from the
National Academy of Education announcing a webinar by Ed Week entitled
Getting Reading Right. Somehow the information about the webinar didn't
make it BUT it did result in Jim sharing a great NEPC interview with RHF
member, Elizabeth Moje! Thanks, Elizabeth.
I hope the Ed Week Seminar announcement comes through. It alleges to be
based on the science of reading and appears to have been financially
supported by the Spencer Foundation and sponsored by IStation, one of many
competing companies marketing computerized formative assessments of reading
skills (among other things), based, as one might expect, on the science of
reading.
I hope the invite comes through and that some RHF members participate. I
can't because of a direct conflict. I would like to know more about the
message. Looks like the bulk of the seminar involves EdWeek reporters,
with some keynotes by folks affiliated with the newly energized science of
reading movement.
They also promise to share data from a recent survey of school personnel
and teacher educators. To quote, the survey is about, "what elementary
teachers and education professors know and believe about early reading."

The "nation's report card" shows that just over a third of 4th graders are
proficient readers. That's despite decades of cognitive research specifying
the skills students need to be taught to read fluently. So what's happening
in schools—and in teacher preparation—that's making it so hard for some
students to gain these foundational skills?
In this online summit, Education Week reporters and their expert guests
will discuss the science behind how kids learn to read, as well as explore
original survey data on what elementary teachers and education professors
know and believe about early reading.
