Steven Dysktra's emails remind me of the false narratives re: dyslexia proselytized by Reid Lyon when he was at NICHD.
The position held by Lyon was debunked in Beginning to Read and the Spin Doctors of Science: The Political Campaign to Change America's Mind about How Children Learn to Read. I was told by someone who heard Lyon speak after the book came out that he introduced himself as "Spin Doctor number three."
Dykstra makes the same arguments as Lyon on teaching children "with dyslexia". In this context the book Learning Denied provides a systematic analysis of the negative impact on the learning and well-being of a young child who was the recipient of Dykstra's "scientific" approach.
Parenthetically, I met the child in Learning Denied when he was 16. When he was in first and second grade we'd read and wrote stories and worked together after school on science projects -- both ecological and space based. He told me he was planning to walk the Appalachian Trail and he had become an avid reader of natural history -- which he attributed to the stories and projects we'd worked on to counter the disabling synthetic phonics/phonemic awareness exercises that had been his experience in school.
There are many examples in the annals of science of false scientific narratives that have become accepted and unquestioned by both scientists and the public. Much of my work in recent years has focused on how false narratives are established -- there are many reasons for this phenomenon -- social, political, economic.
I hope these thoughts are useful. They are quickly written but on a solid foundation.
Denny

Professor Pearson,
You recently signed onto a letter that made false claims about the status of dyslexia in the DSM. I assume you were unaware they were false when you signed the letter. Now that you know, are you considering a full or partial retraction of your support?
Steve Dykstra
