[Reading-hall-of-fame] Re: response from PBS

Thinking out loud following Cathy's idea and Judith's elaboration:
I think that a conference on the matter, under the auspices of an AERA
grant, is a great idea. Moddy McKeown, Paul Deane and others did one a few
years back on Vocabulary Assessment. It was very successful. One of their
strategies was to invite folks with *different backgrounds, career stages.
epistemologies, and methodologies* to present and, more importantly, engage
in the free flowing plenary and smaller group conversations. An important
book on vocabulary assessment resulted.
Judith A. Scott, M. G. McKeown, Paul D. Deane, René R. Lawless, and Robert
Krovetz *Vocabulary Assessment to Support Instruction: Building Rich
Word-Learning Experiences, *Guilford*.*
If we were to do a similar conference on Dyslexia, Disability, and allied
issues that translate into policy and pedagogical practices, we'd want a
similarly broad set of RESEARCH perspectives on the topic. I know there
are many others, BUT for starters, among members of the RHF whose
experience, scholarship, and policy work in this area recommend them as key
players (translate as folks *who I would want involved in such an
endeavor*) would
be Donna Scanlon and Peter Johnston. I know it'd not nice to volunteer
others, but they certainly know the territory well.
This suggestion does not preclude other, especially shorter term, efforts
at response. But such an endeavor would represent a longer term and
potentially deeper, response.
