For colleagues and friends of Bill Teale, here is the official obituary and information about the celebration of his life this Friday from 1 - 4.

Dr. William Herbert Teale, known as Bill, age 70, passed away unexpectedly Saturday in his home in Evanston, IL. He is survived by his wife, best friend, and professional partner, Junko Yokota, and two children, Jeremy Teale and Alyssa Yokota-Lewis, among other family members and friends.

He was born June 19, 1947 in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania to Llewellyn Joseph Teale (father) and Ethel Jean Hertzog-Teale (mother). He attended Pennsylvania State University where he received his BA in English, and later the University of Virginia where he completed his Ed.D. in Reading and English Education.

Over the span of his career, Bill devoted both heart and mind to the field of literacy. He was a widely respected researcher and educator whose work had significant impact on educational policy and practice around the world. He was named University Scholar at the University of Illinois, Fulbright Specialist, Fellow of the National Conference of Research on Language and Literacy, and was a member of the prestigious Reading Hall of Fame since 2003. He received the President’s Distinguished Achievement Award for Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio and is included in the Who’s Who among America’s Teachers and Who’s Who in American Education. He served as President of the International Literacy Association (2016-2017) and on the Board of Directors of the Literacy Research Association. He served as editor of key professional journals in the field of language and literacy, and authored hundreds of contributions through articles, chapters, and books.

Bill’s numerous academic accomplishments and contributions to the field of literacy have had significant impact and remain inspiring.  He is best known for his kind nature, profound humility, and great sense of humor. Those who met him knew him to be soft spoken and big hearted; he had a way of immediately making anyone feel valued and accepted in his presence.
