Bill Teale was smart, quiet, kind, and passionately committed to improving opportunities in reading for all children, in all nations. He also knew how to have fun and he would often share a quick, and easy-going smile along with a bright twinkle in his eyes. Bill was one of the people I have met in life, where I say to myself, “I need to be more like him.” His quiet, thoughtful, and gentle manner was something I aspired to. Bill, Chuck Kinzer, Linda Labbo, and I worked together for five years on the CTELL research and development project, funded by the National Science Foundation, to develop video cases of best practice classrooms that were delivered online for teacher education. We also worked together, with Nina Zolt and Linda Gambrell, on the ePals Project, developing the In2Books program. This is an innovative, volunteer, online program to support readers in economically challenged districts through personal correspondence about books the children were reading.

I will always remember the library at their home. Bill and Junko turned their large garage into the most wonderful library for children’s literature that I have ever seen. The walls were absolutely covered in books! There was a special feeling in your heart if you were lucky enough to sit in the middle of this collection, surrounded by works of the finest in children’s literature. It was where they often worked.

On the day of his passing, I received a note from a Japanese friend and the Director of International Affairs for the Japan Reading Association, Sachiko Adachi. Apparently, Bill had recently asked Sachiko if it might be possible to obtain information about two of our members for posting at the RHOF website: Dr. Ichiro Sakamoto (now deceased) and his son, Dr. Takahiko Sakamoto. Sachiko sent along these materials with her note. It was typical of Bill to always do things like this — honoring others while working to better connect all of us in the literacy community to advance opportunities for students and teachers.

We shall all miss you tremendously, Bill. Godspeed, my friend.

Don

Very sad news and unbelievable. Bill is a very well known and inspired man in the literacy community in Greece and we all remember his excellent plenary speech during the conference in 2015 in Crete.

It is true, the world of literacy lost a great man.

David, I am collecting everyone's messages and saving them for Junko and Alyssa.

Alyssa is especially interested in learning stories of her dad's professional life, so if anyone is willing to share those, I know it would mean a lot to her in particular, and to both Alyssa and Junko and family in the days and weeks and months ahead. Thank you all for your kind words. Bill was truly a treasure.

It is, for me, beyond belief that someone as alive—as vibrant in mind, spirit, and body—as Bill has been taken from us--seemingly without warning and in the prime of his senior years.

Taffy, I hope that you and Jim can share our thoughts about Bill with Junko, Alyssa, and Jeremy. I hope his family members can take some solace in knowing that their husband and father was widely revered, respected, and loved by hundreds of colleagues and students around the world. He touched and blessed us all with his professional commitment, his razor sharp mind, and his generous spirit.

Dear Reading Hall of Fame Members:

I received the following from Taffy Raphael and Jim Gavelek.

The world of literacy has lost a great man, and we personally have lost a dear friend and colleague. Bill Teale passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 4th at his home in Evanston. Bill was a model husband (Junko Yokota), father (Alyssa, Jeremy), friend, teacher, and scholar. He will be missed more than words can say.
In the days to come, Bill's lasting contributions to the literacy community - locally, nationally and internationally - will be celebrated by members of the many professional organizations with whom he worked, often in leadership positions.
For his colleagues at UIC, his loss is unfathomable. In addition to his scholarship, Bill was a tireless mentor to faculty and students alike. He brought both wisdom and a wry sense of humor to everyday academic life.
The four of us – Bill, Junko, Jim, and Taffy – worked together, traveled together, lived together, laughed together and his passing leaves such a hole in our lives.
Our hearts go out to all who will miss him terribly.
Further information will be shared as it becomes available.

With a heavy heart,

Ray
