Oh this news is such a shock and so very sad. Bill was indeed a gentle and caring person. He always greeted us Aussies with a very warm smile and greeting; making me feel very welcomed. As Peter said he was a plenary at our national literacy (ALEA) conference last year. Our teachers loved his address and his willingness to stop and talk. Bill will be greatly missed by the international community. My sincere condolence to his family.

Hello colleagues
So sad to hear about Bill's passing.
I was lucky enough to get to know him a little over the last few years and then to spend a lot of time with him during his visit to the Hobart conference last year. His presentation at that conference was excellent.
He was scholarly, smart, warm, and fun, without a hint of pretense or solemnity -- all the virtues.
His friends here send their condolences to Junka and Alyssa.
Best regards
Peter

David, I am collecting everyone’s messages and saving them for Junko and Alyssa.
Alyssa is especially interested in learning stories of her dad’s professional life, so if anyone is willing to share those, I know it would mean a lot to her in particular, and to both Alyssa and Junko and family in the days and weeks and months ahead. Thank you all for your kind words. Bill was truly a treasure.

It is, for me, beyond belief that someone as alive—as vibrant in mind, spirit, and body—as Bill has been taken from us--seemingly without warning and in the prime of his senior years.
Taffy, I hope that you and Jim can share our thoughts about Bill with Junko, Alyssa, and Jeremy. I hope his family members can take some solace in knowing that their husband and father was widely revered, respected, and loved by hundreds of colleagues and students around the world. He touched and blessed us all with his professional commitment, his razor sharp mind, and his generous spirit.

Dear Reading Hall of Fame Members:
I received the following from Taffy Raphael and Jim Gavelek.
The world of literacy has lost a great man, and we personally have lost a dear friend and colleague. Bill Teale passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 4th at his home in Evanston. Bill was a model husband (Junko Yokota), father (Alyssa, Jeremy), friend, teacher, and scholar. He will be missed more than words can say.
In the days to come, Bill’s lasting contributions to the literacy community - locally, nationally and internationally - will be celebrated by members of the many professional organizations with whom he worked, often in leadership positions.
For his colleagues at UIC, his loss is unfathomable. In addition to his scholarship, Bill was a tireless mentor to faculty and students alike. He brought both wisdom and a wry sense of humor to everyday academic life.
The four of us – Bill, Junko, Jim, and Taffy – worked together, traveled together, lived together, laughed together and his passing leaves such a hole in our lives.
Our hearts go out to all who will miss him terribly.
Further information will be shared as it becomes available.
With a heavy heart,
Ray
