I have a licence too and find zoom easy to use and reasonably cheap.
The most expensive aspect of it I’ve found is cost of storage on the cloud. Once you use up your allocated cloud storage sums like $400 for more cloud space start to be bandied about.
You can offset this by saving a session on your computer as an MP3 file and making it available via Dropbox.
The time of the session will be crucial for those of us who live in other countries.
If it means getting up at 2.00am Australian time I’d think twice about getting my old bones up in the middle of our winter.

David and Ray, wonderful plan. I will be "live" and non-virtual in Indian Wells, I hope. However, to halfway address your question, David, here's a subquestion: Isn't Zoom speaker-sensitive, like Google Hangouts are (though limited to about 10 people and not nearly as good as Zoom). By speaker-sensitive, I mean, when a person in the virtual audience begins to talk, the screen automatically switches to them (a close-up effect). I'm guessing that maybe the same happens for speakers who are in Indian Wells.

Does anyone know? I don't have the broadcast license that David has, but I use Zoom quite often when conversations are 45 minutes or under and limited to two sites. Anything over those restrictions result in fairly high fees being added to one's 'phone' bill (or so I've been warned both on Zoom's website and by colleagues who have had to ante up for conversations lasting over 45 minutes. I'm guessing the license you have, David, erases these limitations.

Exciting to think of ways to increase participation in RHOF meetings!

Onward,
Donna

I possess just such a broadcast license with zoom for my UCB work. I can hook up up to 100 participants, and I don't think Zoom cares where the broadcast comes from. Happy to share.

The key is making the external visitors visible and audible to the group gathered in Indian Wells and the members of the group visible and audible to those on external members.

So if someone knows how to deal with that issue (maybe a mobile camera and mic to carry around the room to those who speak?

RE: Distance Participation in RHF Business Meeting at LRA

Dear Reading Hall of Fame Colleagues:

In preparation for our upcoming RHF Business Meeting at LRA on December 1, 2018, it has been suggested that we provide those who cannot attend access to the proceedings of the Business Meeting via ZOOM or another virtual distance technology. Since we will be discussing our new voting procedure document as one very important item of business, there may be increased interest in joining the discussion from a distance. The use of such technology requires an Internet connection, and dependent upon the number of participants, a broad band hard wired Internet connection may be necessary if we exceed the number of participants who can be served on a normal wireless connection.

I have looked into this possibility and the room for our Breakfast Meeting at LRA will have a wireless Internet connection; however, if the number of participants is large, we would need to engage a hard wired Internet broad band connection which would cost the organization $400.

My purpose in writing to you is to ask three questions. First, if we offered ZOOM how many RHF members who cannot attend LRA/RHF would be inclined to participate via ZOOM in the RHF Business Meeting? Second, if it is a large group, then should we pay the $400 charge? Third, inasmuch as we have not budgeted for a $400 charge in our annual meeting budget, how would we pay for the additional cost?

I would appreciate your input on this matter at your earliest convenience, as we need to make some decisions relative to this request.

Best,

D. Ray Reutzel, President
Reading Hall of Fame
