Hi ,

If anyone has videos, or other information, to share of RHOF members please send them along to me, as well. As Historian for the RHOF, and with the assistance of Norm Stahl and the History of Reading SIGs, we have devoted substantial time to a project this year, adding videos, images, and links to information about members who have left us. See: https://www.readinghalloffame.org/deceased-members

I invite you to review some of these sites and, if you have information to share, please pass along for us to include. When we started this project there was practically nothing at our website for these members. This is changing rapidly.

I also encourage each of us to update our own sites. Many are sparsely populated. If I can provide assistance with this, please let me know.

Cheers,

Don

Greetings,

I think that more than posting such posts, we might want to build a site with the intellectual biographies of our members (past and present) and links to videos as well as key contributions to bring the past to the present. This might be something that would support the new generation in tracing the roots and seeing how transformations are possible when we come together and understand the past as living and a potential for today. David Bloome’s, CVEDA (Center for Video Ethnography and Discourse Analysis) has developed such a developing resource.

If there is an interest in this type of development, I would be happy to explore with others its development. It might require a group to frame what this would require and to set guidelines for those who would contribute to such a site. This may be too ambitious but having had the opportunity to learn from and with Brian over the past decade or more and with others throughout my five decades as a literacy educator and researcher in multiple sites with diverse populations, I am aware of how understanding the histories and roots of my work has been critical to framing new possibilities for others.

Just some thoughts if we are to take Jim Hoffman’s suggestion as an anchor to think further on this possibility.

We have often talked about archiving these kinds of posts on the website. Not sure how to do that but it would be sad to loose these insights. jim

As is true for many of us here in the States, Brian was not only a dear and caring friend, but a stellar scholar, editor, and promoter of the work and ideas of others. Most generous all of his career to acknowledge and credit (and often to summarize in detail) how others had influenced him, Brian must seem to young scholars rare indeed. I say this, for those he credited (and knew personally!) often included Malinowski, J. R. Firth, and other giants whose names have now disappeared into the history of the social sciences.

For me, he was the ultimate connector, ensuring always that I knew his colleagues in Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, Scotland, and England. He wanted everyone to know everyone, and he worked hard at that. Many of us often went to visit him in his beloved sea-front apartment in Brighton, and some of us braved the walk down to the seaside to sit in what he often called his "cabin" (=cabana).

Over many years, he and I thought together, wrote together, and edited each other's ideas. To say that a big chunk of my intellectual life has left me does not begin to capture my sense of loss. My last day with him was a few months ago, when we strolled along the seafront, had a delicious seafood lunch, and captured ourselves in photos we had the waiter take on both our phones. He was looking forward to Lalu's return to England and to their marriage and move to a nearby apartment building that had an elevator. I am heartened that he had some months there with Lalu with frequent visits from friends and family, including his beloved children of whom he was so proud and from whom he always relished learning.

We are all the wiser and humbler for having known and loved this great mind and beautiful soul.

Brian , more than anyone, put the focus on what reading does for individuals and society.
