I have great admiration and respect for Alan as a person and professional. My wife and I have spent time Alan, Susan, and his son, Adam, on several occasions. We have been with them in DE, FL, Scotland, and several other countries. As an IRA committee member, board member and then president, I had plenty of opportunities to engage in both professional and personal conversations with Alan over many years. His professional accomplishments are well documented. His leadership in our profession over the years helped to promote literacy throughout the world.
What also needs to be recognized is the integrity he exhibited through his life. Alan was guided, I think, by a strong ethic of treating people fairly and with respect. He promoted civil exchanges in all matters. He was often a calming influence in stormy conflicts. He led by example. His life was well lived.
Susan has been a great partner in literacy. She worked on committees, was a gracious host to numerous gatherings, and a friend to Annette and me. We share Susan's loss, and extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy to Susan, son Adam, and the family.
With Love,
Jerry

Subject: [Reading-hall-of-fame] Alan Farstrup
Fellow Hall of Fame members:
I received a phone call from Susan Farstrup early Sunday morning letting me know that Alan died during the night. He was in a rehab facility recovering from a recent stroke.
Alan was a long time LRA member, first joining the organization in the middle 1970s. Those of us in the RHF remember Alan as one of our most active members in recent years. And, of course, we remember him from his long tenure (1992-2009) as Executive Director of IRA.
I also remember him as my graduate research/teaching assistant when I taught at the University of Minnesota in the mid 1970s--and as a lifetime friend and confidant.
As soon as plans for a funeral and memorial service are available, I'll pass them onto the listserv.
David
If you haven't looked at it lately, you can remind yourself of Alan's commitments and legacy by reading the very lovely biographical statement on our RHF website at
