Dear All,
You are cordially invited to the conference, Research and Policy on STEM Education in Scotland and England: Learning from Our Neighbours, focusing on STEM education research and policy on June 25th organised by the Targeted Initiative on Science and Mathematics Education (TISME).

The Conference will start at 9.30AM and finish at 2:45PM. Please find attached a copy of the programme of events, featuring policymakers and key academics in the science and mathematics education field.
The conference will bring together policymakers, practitioners and researchers from Scotland and England to discuss key issues and to set out priorities and an agenda for increasing STEM participation in such a way that society’s needs are met and individual potentials are taken fully into account. Speakers include Prof. Graham Donaldson (University of Glasgow); Prof. Wynne Harlen (Visiting Professor, University of Bristol); Ian Menzies (Education Scotland); Fiona Robertson (HMI: Mathematics, Education Scotland); Peter Main (Institute of Physics); Prof. Derek Bell (College of Teachers, independent consultant); Adrian Alsop (Director for research, partnerships and international, Economic and Social Research Council), Prof Michael Reiss (Institute of Education, University of London); Prof Kenneth Ruthven (Cambridge University); Prof Jim Ryder (Leeds University).
At the conference, policy-makers, practitioners and researchers from Scotland and England will discuss key issues and to set out priorities and an agenda for increasing STEM participation in such a way that society’s needs are met and individual potentials are taken fully into account. The conference will address the following questions:
· What can research tell us about why young people choose to study STEM subjects?
· Why is the UK failing to deliver equitable participation?
· What can we do to raise attainment and how pedagogy and assessment can promote this?

The Targeted Initiative on Science and Mathematics Education (TISME) is a programme of research funded by the ESRC in partnership with the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, The Institute of Physics and the Association of Science Education.
Through a portfolio of research studies and dissemination activities, TISME aims to find new ways to encourage children and young people to greater participation, engagement, achievement and understanding of Science and Mathematics.
