*The Mathematics Education into the 21^st Century Project & The
University of North Carolina Charlotte*
*9th Annual International Conference *
"*Mathematics Education in a Global Community"*
*September 7 -- 12, 2007,Charlotte, North Carolina, USA*
*Conference Update No. 2 November 28, 2006*
*(Please email *_*arogerson at inetia.pl* <mailto:arogerson at inetia.pl>_*
for full conference details)*
*1. Conference Program Details: "Meet the World in Charlotte"!*
*
We have already received almost 100 proposals for
papers/workshops, comprising innovative contributions from
Australia, Asia & the Pacific Islands, the Middle and Far East,
Europe and of course North America.
*
In addition to world-renowned mathematics educators such as Fayez
Mina (Egypt), Erik De Corte (Belgium), David Royster (USA), Ludwig
Paditz (Germany), Douglas Butler (UK) and Azlan Zanzali
(Malaysia), the following are also planning to attend: Gail
Burrill (former NCTM President), Donna Berlin, Bradford
Hansen-Smith and Agnes Tuska (USA), Gary Flewelling and Doug
Franks (Canada), Judy Mousley and Peter Grootenboer (President and
Secretary of MERGA, Australia), Liv Gronmo (Norway), Andreas
Filler and Peter Baptist (Germany), Mark Applebaum and Roza Leikin
(Israel), Lynne Tozer (New Zealand), and many more.
*
We are especially pleased that several Principal Directors will be
attending to present papers on their NSF Funded projects in the USA.
*
Margaret Fryska will be speaking about two important ongoing
European Union funded Projects for which she is the Polish
Partner. One Comenius Project is producing lots of innovative
real-life and mathematics materials for students, the other
Socrates project plans to design a Teacher Training Course on
Modelling in Mathematics for lower secondary and primary school
mathematics teachers.
*
The programme promises to be rich and varied and we are looking
forward to the exchanges of ideas and experiences! If you would
like to see the list of proposals so far please email me.
*2. Deadlines*
*
*December 31: NEW deadline* for receipt of your Proposal to
present a paper or workshop. This should be less than one page and
include your name, the title and short description of the proposal.
*
*As Soon as Possible and before June 30th*: Deadline for receipt
of your *Paper/Workshop Summary* including an *Abstract*. We are
planning to have a separate list of *abstracts* to help
participants better choose the sessions they wish to attend.
Please help us in this by including *at the start of your final
paper* an abstract which should NOT be longer than 15 lines
(font12). If you want to see a *MODEL paper formatted exactly as
we require* to guide you in formatting your paper correctly,
please email me.
*Conference Update No. 1*
*1. Deadline for Proposals moved to Dec 31*
We are pleased to announce that the deadline for proposals for
papers/workshops at the conference has been extended. Our earlier
deadline of Sep 30 was really to encourage as many as possible to send
in proposals to help us plan the programme and also have some idea of
how many participants are planning to attend. Thank you to those who
wrote in already to propose or to register, from this we already know
that the conference should be very well attended! Please note
paper/workshop proposals are accepted on a first come-first served basis
and especially with workshops there will be a limit on how many we can
include -- so please help us and yourselves by sending in proposals as
soon as possible and well before the new extended deadline!
*2. Planning Meeting held in Budapest Oct 7, 2006*
David Pugalee and Patsy Douville were both in Budapest last weekend and
Margaret and I joined them so we could meet Saturday evening for a
Conference Planning Meeting, which covered all aspects of the
conference. The meeting was enjoyable and successful and planning is
moving ahead strongly at both the international and local levels. Once
again we wish to thank especially David and the whole LOC in Charlotte
and of course the UNCC for their very strong local support. Some recent
developments discussed at our meeting are detailed below.
3.
*Special Local and USA Teachers Weekend Programme*
In addition to the full International Programme, Sep 7-12, we are also
organising a very special *Local Teachers Weekend Programme*, which will
commence with the Welcome Reception on Friday Sep 7 and finish Sunday
afternoon, Sep 9 (teachers are also able to join us on the Excursion all
day Monday -- this is optional of course). The Teachers Programme will
include some papers/workshops in the international programme (specially
selected to be more relevant) and other sessions for local teachers held
in parallel with the International Programme. This special programme
will enable busy teachers (from Charlotte, North Carolina or elsewhere
in the USA) to attend our conference and sample the international
flavour, as well as attending sessions specially designed to be relevant
to them and their local issues. More details to be announced later, but
there will be for example:....
*4. A Special Plenary Forum* for all participants on *Sunday, Sep 9* to
discuss *"Math Education in the USA"*.
We are pleased and proud to announce that Professor David Royster (UNCC
and formerly of the NSF) has agreed to chair and lead this important
session, and Professor Erik De Corte (Belgium) has also agreed to chair
a follow up (parallel) session later on Sunday. Both David and Erik have
a wide experience of math education issues in the USA, for example Erik
lived and worked during the academic year 2005 -- 2006 as an invited
Fellow at the prestigious Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral
Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford.
*5. Our Academic Programme - "Meet the World in Charlotte"*
We coined this phrase in Budapest because we believe it will be a
highlight especially for USA math educators to come to Charlotte and
really "meet the world" in the persons of many other "movers and
shakers" in educational innovation in other countries! It will also be
an opportunity for all our international friends to meet and enjoy the
company of their USA counterparts, and of course to find out more about
math education in the States. In addition to Erik De Corte (mentioned
above), there will be Plenary Talks by *Professor Azlan Zanzali
(Malaysia)* and *Douglas Butler (UK)* of Autograph fame. We have also
been in contact recently with many *NSF Projects in Math Education in
the USA* and we are delighted to report that several of them will be
sending their NSF Project Leaders to present papers and workshops about
their past and current work in innovation in the USA!
*6. Arrival and Departure from Charlotte International Airport*
Those arriving in Charlotte by air (or indeed also by train or bus)
should make their own way to the Conference Hotel. Please tell us your
exact flight details when you know them, and we can then put you in
touch later with other participants arriving on the same flight or at
the same time -- it would save time and money to share a taxi (for
example) with others! Later we will give you more details of taxi/bus
possibilities from the airport, train and bus stations.
*7. Local Contacts in Charlotte & the Partners Programme *
We have recently been in touch with the *Charlotte Chamber of Commerce*
to help us contact potential local sponsors for the conference, and also
the *Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority* with whom we will be working
locally to help participants become more aware of the lovely City of
Charlotte while they are attending our conference. There are also
opportunities for pre- and post-conference tours for those interested:
not far away are Washington DC, the beautiful beaches of North Carolina
(it will be warm enough in September to swim!), the Blue Ridge Mountains
and so on. There will be special tours locally for Partners, including
one to local wineries and a tour of the City of Charlotte featuring its
museums and other cultural centres and...... shopping (Charlotte has
some of the largest and most interesting Shopping Malls in the USA Patsy
assures us!)
*8. Professor Azlan Zanzali *will be giving a Plenary Lecture entitled
"Continuing issues in
mathematics education: The Malaysian Experience": My plenary talk will
center on the continuing issues in mathematics education (focus on
content, pedagogical and psychological assumptions that we make and
their impact on teaching and learning mathematics) with Malaysia as an
example.
