I think that the symbol m is taken from the old Arab and Muslims' literature in astronomy and mathematics. The Arab word for Gradient is "Mail" which starts with m. This letter 'm' was used by Arabs since more than ten thousands of years. To calculate times for fasting and praying (according to the land you live on), Muslims studied the movements and gradients of the sun and other planets. Albateyni (850-929) was one of the famous scientist in this area and his writings were translated to many European languages.
