[Maths-Education] Request: references about the history of averages

It would be nice to think it was something as subtle and interesting as
the factors you list, but I sadly fear the truth is much simpler and
cruder. I may be wrong, of course, but I would hazard that it has
something to do with the almost 100% market penetration in SW Scotland
of a certain Secondary mathematics scheme. No prizes for guessing which
order the scheme uses? (However the authors are all Scots - so it may be
deeper after all:)
