Dear Colleague

CAMRIDGE MATHEMETICS EDUCATION COLLOQUIA

Monday 5th February 2001 at 5.30 p.m., Room 218, Mary Allan Building,
Homerton College

Dr Peter Huckstep, Homerton College, University of Cambridge
WHY LEARN MATHEMATICS?

The inclusion of a statement on "the importance of mathematics"
distinguishes the current National Curriculum in England from its
predecessors. It is an acknowledgement of the duty of the state to provide
pupils, parents, teachers and policy makers with good reasons for learning
mathematics. Everyone needs some mathematics, but whether or not
mathematics is sufficiently important to warrant its being a compulsory
subject for all pupils to study until the age of sixteen has recently been
disputed by some of the contributors to a recent book 'Why Learn Maths',
which has attracted considerable media attention. Peter Huckstep, author
of one of the chapters, will outline some of the issues raised in the book
to stimulate further discussion.

Tea and coffee will be available from about 5 o'clock. Please let me know
if you'd like directions to Homerton College.

With best wishes,

Tim Rowland
