Dear all,

See below – of interest for early-career researchers (PhD students in particular) in need of travel funds.

This has been sent to all members of staff, I think, but I thought I would forward it here since I am aware not everybody reads messages from the Research Academy (in fact, I know that for some of you the default action with this messages is to pipe them to /dev/null).

Best wishes,

Alfonso

Supervisor News

23 January 2025

Dear Alfonso,

I am delighted to announce that the Researcher Academy has successfully secured funding to reinstate the Conference Travel and Training Fund (CTTF) for the 2024-2025 academic year. Despite the challenging funding landscape, the Researcher Academy remains committed to supporting researchers by creating opportunities for career development and broadening their experience.

This year, the CTTF will run six funding rounds, providing financial support for postgraduate researchers (PGR) and early career research-focussed (ECR) staff to access professional development activities beyond the University. These include in-person and online conferences, structured training events, and other opportunities that enhance researcher mobility and raise academic profiles.

Over nearly two decades, the CTTF has awarded over half a million pounds to empower researchers to present at academic conferences, collaborate internationally, and undertake interdisciplinary projects. These activities not only enhance their professional growth but also build valuable networks and raise the visibility of our research community.

Applications will be reviewed monthly on a rolling basis for the next six months, with the first round closing on Wednesday 19 February. As this is a highly competitive process with a limited budget, please encourage your PGR students and ECR colleagues to plan early and explore additional funding sources to support their applications.

Successful applicants will be required to demonstrate the impact of this funding on their research or career through a short feedback form and will be invited to write a blog or create a vlog, further amplifying the reach of their research.

Please visit our SharePoint page<https://u.nottingham.ac.uk/c/AQjZ2g8QtoB1GObnxgEg_OLOGgWib8a9y4c6aD36YJhNHuqwWrZziouEyaGQZ2davB8H> for detailed information on the application process, future deadlines, and eligibility criteria.

The Researcher Academy is proud to support PGRs and ECRs, enabling them to make the most of opportunities to showcase their research and advance their careers.

Best wishes

Dr Victoria Sedman

Funding to support researchers return to work

This month, the university is launching the Return to Research Scheme, a transformative initiative designed to support researchers returning to work after extended leave.

The scheme, part of the university’s commitment to an inclusive and vibrant Research and Knowledge Exchange (RKE) culture, provides targeted funding and support for staff aiming to re-establish their research careers following significant breaks for parental leave, caregiving responsibilities, or long-term illness.

Postgraduate Researchers from Diverse Backgrounds: A Framework for Defining, Measuring and Supporting Success

Measures for success in postgraduate research are not well-established beyond narrow measures such as thesis submission and completion rates, career destinations and publication metrics.

This framework sets out how to define, measure and support success more broadly and includes case studies of existing and emerging practice as well as specific experiences of PGRs from different backgrounds.

This framework is the latest addition to the Researcher Academy’s portfolio of best practice guides aimed at supporting colleagues to recruit, retain, and support students with the highest potential and desire to succeed in a diverse PGR community.

Researcher Academy Placements and Internships

As a research supervisor, your endorsement is vital in helping your students benefit from our enriching placements programme.

These placements offer invaluable experiential learning through paid opportunities with flexible hours, collaborating with a range of employers from local businesses to multinational organisations.

Research shows that alumni who participate in our placements achieve better degree outcomes, enjoy higher employability rates, and command more competitive salaries than their peers.

They are also more likely to complete their thesis successfully and on time compared to the broader PGR cohort. Your support can make a significant difference in helping students take full advantage of these opportunities.
