Chris Thompson will have the most precise number. He gave a number of over
6200 in his talk at the symposium (but he also gave a number over 6500 on
another slide - I think this included known but as yet undescribed species
but I may have missed the point).

There are 6048 valid species listed in the Dec 2012 version of the Diptera
Nomenclator that I have access to.
