Dear Syrphid friends!

in an analysis of a European hoverfly data set we recognized that
especially the group of phytophagous species seems to be negatively
influenced by mean annual temperatures. One explanation could be that
Cheilosia overwinters as a pupa which might be potentially more
sensitive to freezing in Winter than species overwintering as a larva.

Are there any references concerning winter/frost hardiness of Syrphid
species overwintering as a pupa? (I know of the work by Hart et al.
concerning Syrphus ribesii (larval overwinterer) and Episyrphus and
Hondelmann for Episyrphus (adult overwinterer))

I would be very glad to receive any hints.

Best wishes from cold Berlin,

Frank
