[Syrphidae] Dipteron

Chris,

I agree with You in having a problem with syrphid species being described=20
in "privately" published journals. They are neither abstracted nor readily=
=20
available in libraries. But normally they are in fact available for=20
purchase (e.g. Dipteron, Dipterists Digest). So, in my opinion they do=20
match the criteria in the Nomenclatural code (article 8.1): 1. they provide=
=20
a public and permanent record, 2. they are obtainable by purchase and 3.=20
identical and durable copies are assured.

Of course, everybody willing to describe a species should think about why=20
he/she chose a certain journal for publication. Is it the renom=E9e of a=20
journal, the publication speed, the distribution among=20
syrphidologists/entomologists etc. Everyone will have different reasons for=
=20
his/her choice . . .

Best wishes from rainy Leipzig,

Frank Dziock
