The Public Engagement Opportunities Bulletin is a monthly round-up of key opportunities to support high quality engagement, brought to you by the Institute for Policy and Engagement.

Online Activities

We are aware that many of you are making plans to transform physical events in virtual ones, as we are no longer able to invite our audiences and collaborators onto campus. If you are doing this please do get in touch, as we are keen to help you promote events or market digital resources you create.

Concordat for the Advancement of Knowledge Exchange in Higher Education

Universities UK and GuildHE have published their Knowledge Exchange Concordat<https://www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/policy-and-analysis/reports/Pages/knowledge-exchange-concordat.aspx> on the Universities UK website. The concordat is published but not yet activated, as it was felt that would be inappropriate at this current time. Details on the process asking institutions to sign up to the principles and commit to supporting improvement in knowledge exchange will follow later in the year.

The knowledge exchange concordat is designed to:

  *   give universities, other higher education providers and research institutions, along with their staff and students, a clarity of mission and support for the KE activities they perform
  *   give partners an accurate representation of the approach that individual organisations are taking to KE
  *   provide clear indicators of their approaches to performance improvement
  *   encourage organisations to work together to strengthen KE practices across the sector and to deliver KE when appropriate
  *   give governing bodies and governments broad confidence in the activity that is taking place
The hope is that the document will provide a framework through which universities can ensure they have the approaches in place to facilitate staff and students having a major impact on society.

UPP Foundation Civic University Network

Sheffield Hallam University has won the bid to host UPP Foundation's Civic University network<https://www.shu.ac.uk/about-us/civic-university-network>, which aims to support universities which have committed to developing a Civic University Agreement (CUA) by developing and promoting best practice. It will support CUA signatories to create strategies rooted in a robust analysis of local needs and opportunities, through hosting events, creating a peer-review scheme and publishing reports and toolkits.

The immediate priority will be to facilitate a coordinated response from the entire higher education sector to support communities dealing with the social and economic challenges presented by COVID-19.

STEMM-CHANGE public engagement survey

STEMM-CHANGE, an EPSRC-funded project driving positive changes in EDI culture and practices, wants to hear from staff participating in scientific outreach and public engagement online. The project is keen to hear from staff at all levels working in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine)-based subjects as well as those working in social sciences (e.g. psychology, economics, sociology/sociolinguistics). In undertaking this research the team hopes to better understand the user-end experience of being visible scientists online in global public spaces.

Upcoming Virtual Events

Adult Education Online Programme<https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/education/events/2019-20/adult-education.aspx>
21 April - 7 July 2020, Online Webinars
The University of Nottingham has organised thirty-four special online discussion classes in response to the needs of the communities of Nottingham and the East Midlands. At a time when we are isolated by the coronavirus epidemic, the sessions provide an opportunity to discuss and learn about important topics.
The topics are of two kinds. Some are related to the coronavirus epidemic and the issues it raises. Others are of much more general interest. Organisers we hope all will provide an opportunity for intelligent and informed discussion of important matters.
Each session will last for one hour. After a very brief introduction by a session chair, the session tutor will give a presentation on the topic; this will last about ten minutes. Following this, there will be a discussion facilitated by the chair.
Registration is open to all adults. There is no fee. However, to facilitate free discussion, the number who can register for any session will be limited, and each discussion will be chaired by an expert adult educator from the University’s School of Education. You must register separately for each session you wish to attend.

Funding Opportunities

Public Engagement Spark Awards<https://stfc.ukri.org/public-engagement/public-engagement-grants/pe-funding-opportunities/stfc-public-engagement-spark-awards/>
The Science and Technology Facilities Council is inviting proposals for up to £15,000.
STFC Spark Award holders undertake high quality programmes of novel public engagement that inspire and involve target audiences with stories of STFC science and technology. Proposed engagement programmes must clearly focus around the remit of the STFC science programme (astronomy, solar and planetary science, particle physocs, particle astrophysics, cosmology, nuclear physics and accelerator science) or clearly align to the science and technology work of STFC's national and international laboratories and facilities. Closing date 21 May.

They have responded by reaching out to their artist contacts and producing a series of short pieces, released every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10 am.
