Public Engagement Academy

The third and final session of this year's Public Engagement Academy took place on 8th May with a webinar on evaluating public engagement. We are now in the process of developing a new programme for next academic year. Reminder: Public Engagement Small Grants Scheme<https://workspace.nottingham.ac.uk/display/CandM/Public+Engagement+Small+Grants+Scheme+2019-20>
There is still time to apply for the Public Engagement Small Grants. The scheme will run in the 2019-20 financial year to support academics and researchers from across the University to engage public groups with their research with the goal of generating mutual benefit.
What funding is available?
A limited number of grants are available to support a specific initiative or set of initiatives which engage public audiences with research projects or themes. The amount of funding awarded will typically be in the region of £2000 - £3000, although applications for up to £5000 will be considered for exceptional projects. This funding is available to academic and research staff across all faculties and schools on the UK campuses.

Payments for all activities under the scheme must be made by the end of July 2020.

More details and the application form are available on Workspace<https://workspace.nottingham.ac.uk/display/CandM/Public+Engagement+Small+Grants+Scheme+2019-20>. Application deadline: 31 May 2019.

Engage 2019: Call for Contributions<https://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/nccpe-projects-and-services/engage-conference/engage-2019>
4 and 5 December 2019, Bristol

Engage is the NCCPE's annual conference, providing an opportunity for all those interested in public engagement in higher education to come together, to be inspired, challenged and refreshed.

Engage 2019<https://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/nccpe-projects-and-services/engage-conference/engage-2019> will pose these questions:

  * What is the role of universities in 21st century society? What do these profound changes mean for how universities work and who they work with?
  * To what extent do universities truly understand their people and their place? How can they gain deeper understandings that would foster more intelligent ways of engaging? What are the barriers to participation and whose responsibility is it to remove them?
  * What can we learn from different cultures, contexts and approaches? Where has disruption led to better outcomes, and how has this happened?
If you would have transformational stories to share, tricky issues to explore, or would like to stimulate discussion, debate and reflection, please share your ideas.

Application form and more details are available here<https://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/engage-2019-call-contributions>. Applications close on the 18th June 2019.

Funding Opportunities
Wellcome, Public Engagement Fund<https://wellcome.ac.uk/funding/schemes/public-engagement-fund>

This fund enables individuals and organisations to use creative approaches in engaging the public with health research.
The Public Engagement Fund is open to individuals and organisations (commercial and not-for-profit). Your project must focus on health, although this doesn’t need to be your organisation’s main focus or core activity.

You can be working in the arts, culture, entertainment media, heritage, leisure, education, research, informal learning, social enterprise, non-profit and community sectors, or other fields.

Successful projects need to support our public engagement goals<https://wellcome.ac.uk/what-we-do/our-work/public-engagement>, so it should do at least one of the following:

  * empower people by helping them to access, use, respond to, and/or participate in health research and innovation
  * improve health research by making it more people-centred, to better understand people’s experiences and draw on that knowledge
  * help people to value and think critically about science, health research, innovation and the role these play in society.
Applications deadline: 9 July 2019.

1. The NCCPE launched a new resource<https://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/whats-new/news/lessons-engaging-environments-programme> based on learning from the Engaging Environments programme<https://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/nccpe-projects-and-services/nccpe-projects/engaging-environments>, a project funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
The booklet pulls together key learning from the programme, that we hope will be useful for anyone working to develop more effective public engagement with environmental science, whether as a researcher or as an engagement professional.

2. Science and poetry: Effing the ineffable<http://blogs.nottingham.ac.uk/makingsciencepublic/2019/04/30/science-and-poetry/>, blog post by Brigitte Nerlich, Emeritus Professor of Science, Language and Society, on Science Rhymes, event organised by Gerardo Adesso (Professor of Mathematical Physics) as part of Nottingham Poetry Festival.
