Professor Hilary Povey - Professorial Lecture
Promoting equity in and through author/ity in the mathematics classroom
Tuesday 30 November 2010
Room 7140, Stoddart Building, Arundel Gate, City Campus, Sheffield
6 for 6.30pm

Throughout her career, in both teaching and research, Hilary has grappled with issues of equity in and through the teaching of mathematics. In this lecture she will give an overview of the work with which she has been engaged, drawing on the concept of author/ity which she developed originally in her doctoral research and which has continued to contribute to her thinking since then.

Hilary will consider (i) how we might work in initial and continuing mathematics teacher education to promote the development of mathematics teachers' engagement with equity and (ii) how we can create mathematics classrooms which are more open and just spaces where learners are successful, where they enjoy learning and where they develop democratic competences.

Before coming to Sheffield Hallam University, Hilary worked in a number of different roles for the Inner London Education Authority - teaching in secondary schools; working as a head of department and an advisor; and directing SMILE, a teacher-led mathematics curriculum development project. At Sheffield Hallam University, she has taught mathematics and mathematics education to undergraduate and postgraduate students; has directed both research and curriculum projects including acting as mathematics director and lead curriculum material developer for the cre8ate maths project; and has contributed in both senior academic and research roles. She has an international reputation in mathematics education research and was convener of International Organisation of Women and Mathematics Education for several years.

Places for this event are free but must be booked in advance. Refreshments will be served on arrival and light buffet supper will follow at 7:30pm.

Best wishes
