Initial Teacher Education Matters

You are warmly invited to join us for one of the consultation events for Initial Teacher Education Matters. Further details of both the project and the consultation events follow.

The Association of Mathematics Education Teachers (AMET) has been invited by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) to undertake a consultation within the Initial Teacher Education (ITE) community to review and describe aspects of ITE that are found to be most important and effective for the ITE community. The intention is to arrive at some agreed statements that are underpinned by research and experience. In addition it is intended to look at perceived barriers and enhancers and to endeavour to find strategies to overcome barriers and promote wider understanding and use of enhancers. The set of outcomes will also include case studies drawn from those within the ITE community.

The methodology will be similar to that used in the NCETM Mathematics Matters project. In this "a draft set of values and principles for teaching and learning were established at an initial conference in London, in May 2007. These were then discussed, amended and exemplified through lesson accounts at a series of regional colloquia over the following year leading to a final report". For ITE matters there will be four consultation events at the end of November/beginning of December as well as other consultation activities taking place leading to the final report, which will be available in February 2011.

The consultation events will be held as follows:

Wednesday 24 November at Mary Ward House Conference and Events Centre, 5-7 Tavistock Place London WC1H 9SN www.marywardhouse.com

Monday 29 November at Birmingham City University, Faculty of Education, Law and Social Sciences, Attwood Building, Perry Barr, Birmingham B42 2SU

Tuesday 30 November at the Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol, 35 Berkeley Square, Bristol BS8 1JA

Thursday 2 December at the STEM Centre/National Science Learning Centre; Campus North, University of York, York, YO10 5DD

There will be no charge for attendance at these events and refreshments and lunch will be provided for delegates. Registration for each event will start at 9.30am followed by the first session at 10.00am and finishing at 3.30pm. Further details of the programme will be sent with confirmation of your place.
