Dear Colleagues
I should be grateful if you could draw the attention of your undergraduate or master’s students to the possibility of a PhD studentship in the Mathematics Education Centre (MEC) in the School of Mathematics at Loughborough university.

Research in the MEC continues to focus on the specialized area of learning and teaching mathematics in higher education and associated areas. MEC researchers are engaged in research projects including

§ the evolving mathematical identities of undergraduate mathematicians

§ the ways in which university mathematics is differentially experienced by men and women

§ e-Proofs: Evaluating a computer-based approach for improving proof comprehension”

§ Visual considerations in the presentation of mathematical proofs.

§ Mathematics – the theory of formal discipline

§ Mathematics teaching at university level and its development

§ The use of technology to support mathematics teaching and learning – specifically voting systems and tablet PCs.

§ Additional needs in university mathematics including dyslexia and dyscalculia

§ Inspiring school students to continue to higher level mathematics.

An important aspect of these projects is that the research is closely related to ongoing practice within the university and beyond.

Anyone who is interested should look for further details on the MEC website at
