DOYLE SPIRAL CIRCLE PACKINGS
An LKL Maths-Art Seminar

Doyle spiral circle packings (DCSPs) are a rich resource for
mathematical investigations with endless applications in computer-based
art and design. They deserve to be better known.

Each DCSP fills the plane with closely packed circles, where the radius
of each circle in a packing is proportional to the distance of its
centre from a central point, These packings exhibit many properties –
each one is massively self-similar, for example. As with many other
mathematical entities, there are several ways to approach the study of
these packings, and this seminar will present several of these.

ALAN SUTCLIFFE has been a key figure in computer art and computer music
since the 1960s. He was a founding member of the Computer Arts Society
(CAS) in 1968, and in the Society's relaunch in 2004. (Note: the CAS
monthly seminars are also held at LKL: see www.computer-arts-society.org)
