THE ART OF LOGIC
*
*An LKL Maths-Art seminar by
Ernest Edmonds
University of Technology, Sydney
Tuesday 13 January, 6.00 **- 7.30pm

*Constructivism was an important movement in early twentieth century art and
work in that tradition continued forward to become one of the major streams
in that century. Logicians taking the Intuitionist viewpoint also termed
their methods as constructivist. There were good reasons for these usages of
the same term in the two apparently quite different fields. Indeed, the
logician Brouwer'swriting was included in a key constructivist (art)
tradition book"DATA".

The talk argues that, within current computer-based art, generative art
falls into the constructivist tradition. Finally the talk shows that logic
programming provides ways of composing time-based generative art that has
great advantages. The presentation discusses the way that the author has
employed logic and logic programming as a significant mechanism that has
helped him develop new kinds of generative art and performance.

*Ernest Edmonds was born in London and now lives and works in Sydney,
Australia. His art is in the constructivist tradition and he first used
computers in his art practice in 1968. He first exhibited a generative
time-based computer work in London in 1985. He has exhibited throughout the
world, from Moscow to LA. His current work is developing from a concern with
interaction to an exploration of generative art systems that evolve over
long periods of time as they are influenced by the world around them. He is
currently Professor of Computation and Creative Media at the University of
Technology Sydney. He is Editor-in-Chief of Leonardo Journal's **
Transactions.*
