Do you know someone interested in researching mathematics education?

We are offering a 4-year ESRC-funded doctoral scholarship to work alongside Dr Jeremy Hodgen, Professor Margaret Brown, Dr Dietmar Küchemann and Dr Robert Coe on the ESRC-funded study, Increasing Competence and Confidence in Algebra and Multiplicative Structures (ICCAMS). This is an opportunity to study children's mathematical understandings and to develop expertise in both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study involves large scale testing, work in the classroom with teachers and work with small numbers of students. The successful candidate would be involved with any or all of these aspects, depending on their interests.

Details of this studentship and more general information about the ICCAMS project can be found here:
www.kcl.ac.uk/schools/sspp/education/research/projects/iccams.html

The studentship would be based within the Mathematics Education Research Group at King's College London. This is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in teaching and research in mathematics education and welcomes individuals who are interested in making a contribution to a friendly and dynamic group with a strong research culture.

The scholarship is available either as a 1+3 award or, for a suitably qualified candidate, as a +3 award. For the 1+3 award, the first year would be spent on the department's MRes programme. This award is subject to the standard terms and conditions for ESRC Research Studentships. Essentially, these mean that it is available only to persons already ordinarily resident and with settled status in the United Kingdom or another European Union country. Candidates must also satisfy normal College and Departmental requirements for PhD study.

Training will be provided, but the successful candidate is likely to have some background in education or psychology and to have some knowledge of mathematics teaching.

Applications for the ICCAMS Doctoral Research Studentship should be submitted by 11th May 2009. Details of how to apply can be found via the link above.

Further details and answers to queries can be obtained from the ICCAMS Project Director, Jeremy Hodgen (jeremy.hodgen at kcl.ac.uk).
