[Maths-Education] A London seminar announcement

Dear colleagues,

Speaker: Professor Helen Doerr, Syracuse University, visiting London
South Bank on sabbatical
Title: Theorizing about teachers' on-the-job learning when meeting the
literacy challenges of standards-based curriculum materials
Abstract: While much research has focused on the role of communication
in student learning, considerably less attention has been paid to how
teachers learn to engage students in communicating their ideas. I will
describe how a group of urban middle grade teachers learned to address
the literacy demands for students' mathematical writing when using
contextually complex curriculum materials. I will conclude with some
tentative remarks about a practical theory of teacher learning.

Venue: London South Bank University (room/building information to be
circulated soon)
Date: Wednesday 17 October 4:30 pm

Please reply to Steve Lerman (lermans at lsbu.ac.uk) if you are intending
to come.

This initiative will be known as the London Mathematics Education
Research Seminar Series (LMERSS) and will be supported and publicised
by the NCETM in London. Information on the seminar series will be
available on the London page of the NCETM Portal
(www.ncetm.org.uk/london ) and all enquiries and suggestions can be
