We would like to draw your attention to the Fifth Annual Institute of Mathematics Pedagogy announcement attached.

There are a moderate number of places left for this meeting, which will have a maximum of 25 participants.  These institutes attract a wide range of participants, from new to experienced teachers, advisory teachers, teacher educators and curriculum developers from UK, Europe, and elsewhere.  The group works intensively in a workshop atmosphere on deep issues concerning learning, doing and teaching mathematics.

We welcome new participants.

The 5th ANNUAL 
INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICS PEDAGOGY

will take place at the

Maths Education Centre, Sheffield Hallam University 
in Sheffield
from 
Thursday July 28 
to 
Sunday July 31sr
2005  


The Institute will be led by John Mason, Malcolm Swan and Anne Watson and will consist of workshops, seminars, readings, reflections and discussions about teaching and learning mathematics.   There will be a full programme from 2pm on the 28th until lunchtime on the 31st including evening activities.

There will be no papers or formal presentations; the group will work intensively and creatively with issues and ideas to develop thinking and practice.  New participants are very welcome.

This year’s theme will be:

Mathematical Structure
What is mathematical structure?
How can learners be prompted to engage with mathematical structure?
Can you learn mathematics without engaging with mathematical structure?
What counts as evidence that learners appreciate mathematical structure?

The fee will £250 and this includes accommodation in Sheffield, all meals and other refreshments, materials and so on.  Non resident fee is £100. In your application, please say something about yourself and your reasons for wanting to come.
