As a generation of mathematics educators who learnt mathematics from =
classic textbooks reaches retirement, we could ask what, if
anything, is going to be lost.  In this seminar we shall look at =
treatments of a mathematical topic from the secondary curriculum
and analyse them using Gibson's notions of affordances and constraints, =
asking 'what is it possible to learn?'  It seems that some
textbook authors use students' natural propensity to classify and =
generalise, providing starting points for investigation which
arise naturally from their examples.  And some textbook authors don't.
