PROVING IN MATHEMATICS: FROM SCHOOL TO UNIVERSITY
The Centre for Studies in Science and Mathematics Education is pleased to
announce that
Professor CELIA HOYLES
Institute of Education, London University
will be with us in Leeds on=20
Thursday 7th March 2002.
>From 3pm to 4:15pm=20
Prof. Hoyles will be leading a=20
WORKSHOP ON PROOF
This will be a seminar and discussion, focussing on proof that will have
implications for study both at school and at the undergraduate level. We
invite mathematicians and mathematics educators to come and debate how
young adults learn about mathematical proof in ways that can be exploited
within the undergraduate curriculum.

>From 5:30pm drinks reception for 6pm lecture
Prof. Hoyles will be giving the 2002 CSSME Annual Lecture on:
IMPROVING PROVING: INSIGHTS FROM A LONGITUDINAL STUDY OF STUDENTS'
MATHEMATICAL REASONING
In her talk Professor Hoyles will discuss factors that influence students'
mathematical reasoning as identified in a large scale nation-wide survey in
which several schools from Leeds are taking part. She will give examples of
how students made progress in mathematical reasoning between the ages of
13 to 14 years and use case study data of selected schools and students to
present ideas for helping students to come to appreciate the complexities
of proving in school mathematics.

This lecture will be of interest to school teachers, mathematicians and
anyone interested in current developments in mathematics education. Celia
Hoyles is Professor of Mathematics Education and an internationally
recognised researcher. She has given talks all over the world, co-authored
many books and articles, and directed over a dozen research projects on
primary and secondary Mathematics - particularly in relation to the use of
computers. Her most recent work has been on proof in secondary school
mathematics (including Leeds schools) and the design of exploratory
computer environments for young children. She was nominated for 'Woman of
the Year' in 1998. Academic achievements aside she is a very nice person
and a good speaker.
Lecture and work shop will be held in the Mathematics Education area: room
8.90 E C Stoner Building, University of Leeds .
