FULL TIME LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER IN PRIMARY MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
(REF 275/02)

The Faculty of Education has eight professors, 70 lecturing staff and
over 40 research staff. It is organised as five research and teaching
groups (RTGs) so that as far as possible teaching is research-led and
vertically integrated with staff teaching their specialisms through
undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. There is also a
steady flow of post-doctoral fellows from the developing world who
work alongside the PhD students in their RTGs.
The five RTGs are: Language and Literacy Studies in Education;
Learning, Teaching and Assessment; Educational Support and Inclusion;
Management and Institutional Development and Human Communication and
Deafness.
The Learning, Teaching and Assessment RTG is led by Professor Julian
Williams, and is responsible for the following teaching programmes:
MEd ICT in Education
MEd Evidence Based Practice
MEd Communication, Education and Technology
MEd Science Education
PGCE Science
PGCE Maths
PGCE IT
PGCE D&T
PGCE Primary
PhD and MPhil
Job Description
The Faculty of Education is seeking to appoint a successful primary
mathematician to teach on its PGCE Primary programme, to contribute to
undergraduate, masters or doctoral programmes and to make a
significant contribution to the Faculty's research theme in Learning
Teaching and Assessment. The post holder will be responsible to the
Head of the Learning Teaching and Assessment Research and Teaching
Group and through him to the Dean of the Faculty. The duties
associated with the post are detailed below.
1 Research
The post holder will be expected to make a contribution to the
development of a programme of funded and unfunded research within the
Learning, Teaching and Assessment RTG. S/he will be expected to
publish research related outputs in appropriate peer reviewed journals
in line with the RTG's strategy for the next RAE, and to present
papers relating to their research at Faculty Seminars, National and
International Conferences on a regular basis. A commitment to working
with other members of staff in developing research interests is
essential. He/she will be expected to develop proposals for external
funding.
2 Supervision of Research Students
The post holder will supervise taught Masters and research degree
students.
3 Teaching
The post holder will be expected to contribute to the following
teaching programmes
=B7 PGCE Primary Mathematics, part of which is delivered by partnership
schools =B7 Undergraduate, Masters or Doctoral provision in the RTG
The post holder will also be expected to identify opportunities to
develop and deliver CET short courses, where appropriate.
4 Consultancy
The post holder will be expected to develop and maintain contacts with
the professional bodies relevant to his/her work and may undertake
consultancy work on behalf of the Faculty where appropriate
5 Administration
The post holder will be expected to share in the administrative duties
associated with being a member of staff in an active faculty.
Initially these duties will be focussed around the PGCE Primary
Programme. The post holder will also contribute to the wider
activities of the RTG and be expected to undertake various other
administrative tasks, such as representing the RTG on committees
within the Faculty and the University.
Person Specification
Essential
=B7 An appropriate undergraduate degree
=B7 A higher degree in a relevant area
=B7 QTS and significant successful experience of teaching Mathematics in
Schools
=B7 A track record of research and publication in Mathematics Education
=B7 Highly developed communication, inter-personal and managerial skills
=B7 Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
Desirable
=B7 A PhD/Ed D (or to be registered)
=B7 Previous experience of teaching adults within a HE or FE environment
=B7 Experience of supervision of graduate students
=B7 Experience of funded research programmes, preferably as a fund
holder
=B7 Experience of working on an initial teacher education programme in
either a school or HEI
