Background to the conference
The current problem with teacher recruitment and retention is a relatively
new phenomenon, but the underlying shortage of mathematically qualified
people has a longer history.  In 1998, at least 20,000 secondary pupils in
England and Wales lacked a qualified mathematics teacher.  The situation no=
w
appears considerably worse. Shortages are masked through use of
non-specialists with little or no mathematics background or qualifications.
As the demand for mathematically qualified young people increases, the UK i=
s
in a poor position to respond.
The supply of people willing to learn to teach mathematics may come from th=
e
pool of teachers of mathematics or other subjects currently not teaching, o=
f
older professionals who are ready to change careers or of teachers currentl=
y
not working.  There needs to be greater knowledge of, and sensitivity to,
the factors that encourage and discourage recruitment and retention.
The Centre for Mathematics Education (CME), at the Open University, is
hosting a national conference to bring together those who have a
contribution to make to the debate and subsequent development of the
required national strategies. We are working with colleagues in the Teacher
Training Agency (TTA) and the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)=
.
The proceedings will be published as a report for wider circulation.

 Call for Papers
You are invited to submit a paper for discussion during the day. The papers
will be reviewed by members of CME. Accepted papers will be published on th=
e
CME website, http://mcs.open.ac.uk/cme/, made available to delegates on the
day and published in the proceedings.
When submitting a paper, please:
*    Do not exceed 8 pages A4 in Times Roman 12pt, including references.
*    Include an abstract of about 100 words.

Timing of the day=20

The day will start at 10am with coffee and registration.

There will be a mixture of speaker and discussion sessions.
At 3pm, there will be a talk by Professor Celia Hoyles, Institute of
Education and Chair of the Joint Mathematical Council.
The day will end with tea at 3.30.

Registration will be available on-line or by post from 1st July.
The cost will be =A310 to include refreshments and a copy of the proceedings.
